WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, November 22, thousands of people from the D.C.
metropolitan area came together on the National Mall for the 21st annual Help the Homeless Walkathon. The

homelessness. The program also seeks to educate people about the issues facing homeless people.
'We are facing one of the most serious housing and economic crises in our lifetime. In trying economic times
like these, more and more Americans face the risk of becoming homeless. Through Help the Homeless, we
can respond as a community, raise awareness about the issue, and directly support efforts to assist those in
need,' said Herb Allison, President and Chief Executive Officer, Fannie Mae.
Through its Help the Homeless Program, Fannie Mae today also announced a grant of $100,000 to the
United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) as part of a rescue fund for families threatened or
displaced by foreclosure. The rescue fund will be used to assist families avoid foreclosure where possible and
to help owners and renters identify alternative housing when needed.

'Affordable housing is a critical issue that has become a crisis in the DC Metro Area, and foreclosures have
been the eye of the storm for more than a year now. Fannie Mae's support will provide a range of prevention
and assistance services to help families stay in their homes and to help neighborhoods recover and thrive,'
said Angela R. Woods, Interim CEO of UWNCA.
This year, in addition to the thousands of walkers on the National Mall, another 70,000 residents are expected to take part in the more than 670 mini-walks sponsored by schools, community centers and places of worship.
Nonprofits Play a critical role in the National Capital Region.

More than 4,000 nonprofit organizations1 work daily to meet the needs of citizens throughout the National Capital Region. Local nonprofits provide a range of services to citizens, from afterschool programs, job training, environmental conservation, to support for those living with HIV/AIDS.
- Nonprofits in the National Capital Region provide jobs for more than 200,000 and generate approximately $9.6 billion in wages and taxes.2
- Almost one-third of the nonprofits in our region provide critical human services.3
- Most nonprofits have little cushion to weather a significant loss of anticipated revenue.
- After the economic downturn following September 11th, financial deficits for nonprofits grew by 20% in 2002 and some did not recover for years according to a study of the Nonprofit Finance Fund.4
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the top two in the National Capital Region for philanthropic investments in local nonprofits.
- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac provide significant support to 400 nonprofits in the region.5
- Together, they invested $47 M in nonprofits in the National Capital Region in 2007.6
